BETEN:

   Abridged Prescribing Information

  Composition

  Each tablet of BETEN-50 contains:
  Atenolol…50 mg

  Therapeutic Indications & Usage

BETEN-50 is indicated in the management of hypertension, angina pectoris, and in hemodynamically stable patients with definite or suspected myocardial infarction to reduce cardiovascular mortality.

  Contraindications

BETEN-50 is contraindicated in sinus bradycardia, heart block greater than first degree, cardiogenic shock, overt heart failure, untreated pheochromocytoma, and in those with known hypersensitivity to its ingredients. It is not to be advocated in acute myocardial infarction, when the heart failure is not promptly and effectively controlled by 80 mg of intravenous furosemide or equivalent therapy.

BETEN-50 is not to be used in pregnancy.

  Precautions & Warnings

BETEN-50 is to be advocated with caution in congestive heart failure controlled by digitalis and / or diuretics. Continued depression of the myocardium with beta-blocking drugs such as atenolol, can lead to cardiac failure which must be promptly treated appropriately; if the cardiac failure persists, BETEN-50 must be withdrawn.

BETEN-50 must not be discontinued abruptly since this may precipitate severe exacerbation of angina. If angina worsens, or acute coronary insufficiency develops on its discontinuation, BETEN-50 treatment must be promptly reinstituted, at least temporarily.

Combining BETEN-50 with verapamil and diltiazem can cause bradycardia, heart block, and raise left ventricular end-diastolic pressure.

BETEN-50 is to be administered with caution in diabetes and thyrotoxicosis. In those with bronchospastic diseases, beta blockers are advocated only when other antihypertensives are not effective, or are not tolerated; in such instances, the lowest possible dose of BETEN-50 must be employed and stimulants must be made available.

It is not advisable to withdraw BETEN-50 prior to surgery, but care should be taken whilst advocating anesthetics that depress the heart.

BETEN-50 should not be preferably given during lactation and in children. It must be coadministered with care along with clonidine, indomethacin and other NSAIDs.

  Adverse Reactions

The adverse effects due to atenolol (BETEN-50) include gastrointestinal disturbances, central nervous system manifestations, bradycardia and other arrhythmias including heart block, cold extremities, postural hypotension, leg pain, wheezing / dyspnea and allergic reactions.

  Drug Interactions

BETEN-50 can interact with verapamil, diltiazem, clonidine and prostaglandin synthase inhibitors such as indomethacin.

  Recommended Dosage & Administration

Hypertension: 1 BETEN-50 Tablet once daily; if no optimal response within 1-2 weeks, the dose can be increased to 2 BETEN-50 Tabs once daily.

BETEN-50 can be safely combined with other antihpertensives such as thiazides, prazosin and alpha-methyl dopa.

Angina Pectoris: 1 BETEN-50 Tablet once daily; if no optimal response within 1-2 weeks, the dose can be increased to 2 BETEN-50 Tabs once or twice daily.

Renal Dysfunction: 1 BETEN-50 Tablet once daily for creatinine clearance 15-35 ml/min/1.73 m; for those with creatinine clearance <15 ml/min/1.73 m it is optimal to advocate.
